A Lange & Sohne Grand Lange 1 Moonphase 41mm Review

A Lange and Sohne Grand Lange 1 Moonphase 41mm watch

Certain watches have a way of grabbing your attention and then piquing your curiosity. For me, personally, when I see an AL&S watch it gives me this insatiable urge to immediately have a long stare at the case back. Something about the elegant flashes of gold, the blued screws, pink rubies, especially the combinations of different finishing techniques on the ¾ plate, and the one-of-a-kind hand engraving always gets to me.

The Lange & Sohne manufacture L095.3 caliber that powers this timepiece has 446 parts that are carefully finished to perfection. This 45-jewel hand-wound mechanical movement is a 3Hz caliber that beats at 21,600 VpH.

The Grand Lange Moonphase has a sizeable power reserve duration of approximately 72-hours and this can be monitored via the power reserve indicator at the 3 o’clock position of the silver dial.

The watch featured in this post is reference number 139.032 which comes with a polished 18kt rose gold case that measures at 41mm across and 9.5mm thick. It has a chamfered edge on the bottom of the case and a rounded smooth filleted edge on the top side of the case. The case has a quick corrector button at the 10 o’clock position allowing you to make quick adjustments to the big date complication.

The pièce de resistance is the dial design. It has a large double window big date is at the 1 o’clock, the single rose gold hand power reserve indicator at the 3 o’clock position, a small running seconds at the 5 o’clock position and an uncentered main dial at the 9 o’clock position.

The main dial has an integrated moon-phase window which is absolutely exquisite! A midnight blue moon phase disk decorated with a starry night background features a rose gold-toned moon. This is a highly accurate moon phase complication that only needs adjustments once in every hundred and twenty-two years using a special tool.

Four appliqué Roman numerals are at the XII, III, VI & IX with small diamond-shaped hour markers in between. A black printed seconds track with thicker minute markers at every five-minute interval around the perimeter of the main dial. Just like the small running seconds track, the main dial has a textured radial guilloche ripple pattern except that on the small seconds sub-dial it fills the entire dial whereas on the main dial it’s on the outer area of the dial and not on the central integrated moon phase area.

This watch comes on a solidly constructed brown alligator leather strap with an 18kt rose gold pin buckle with the LANGE engraved along the edge of the buckle. Click on the buttons below for special pricing.
